Want to separate yourself from the competition…don’t email… send your resume Priority mail. Federal Express is too expensive.  I had a client send his resume and a CD with a short PP presentation by courier. He got a phone call in less than 24 hours.  This was not a big corporation.
Tired of hearing "you are overqualified” when you interview? Employers do not eliminate you because they think you are overqualified.  In most cases you are the reason you are over qualified.  The way you respond and communicate.  For instance I had a candidate say to me “I match this job 110%.  I can do everything you are looking for.”  It was a short interview.  He told me he was over qualified.  We don’t hire 100%.  We want the person to be able to learn something, be challenged, and stretch in their thinking.  If the person matches the job 110%, I guarantee you, the individual would be dissatisfied and either start looking or resign.
A question I get all the time is “I don’t have a college degree and should I borrow money and go back to school?  What can I do?  My answer is it depends on where you are in your career.  If you are in the beginning and have the money and time, then you might consider it.  I work with older individuals and going back to college isn’t an option.  The answer is certifications.  I asked this question when I was with a group of employers and they agreed that if they had to choose between a candidate with a degree that was received 15 years ago and an individual who had a current certification, and everything else was equal, they would go with the current certification.  Today, you can receive industry certifications in most fields.

The Pareto principle, also known as the 80-20 rule, is a common rule of thumb in business; for example ”80% of your sales come from 20 % of your clients.” Would you be surprised if I said we have the same rule in today’s job market?  80% of the people in the job market today are not getting jobs. Why? They are caught in the revolving door, they are going in the door, interviewing with the employer and then back out the door and on the street.  They are just like everyone else.  Same experience, same skills, same education etc.  20% of the candidates are getting jobs.  Why? They are separating themselves from the competition. They have a “personal brand.” The employer remembers them for their responses, questions, and persona.  What does your personal brand say about you?
